Diego, considered California’s birthplace, was discovered
in 1542 by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. Franciscan friar
Junipero Serra established a mission along the San Diego
River in 1769. The site can still be seen in Old Town
San Diego. World War II brought the Pacific Naval Headquarters
to the city from Pearl Harbor.
Today, San Diego has the largest naval air station on
the West Coast and one of the world’s best zoos. Spreading
